This is one of my recent oil paintings. It was a Christmas gift. I painted it en plein air in the Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop, which is a part of Deep River, Connecticut. The red of the elderberries was vibrant in November. Now, the ground is covered with snow and the berries have mostly been eaten by birds.
I love painting outdoors--or en plein air, as the French would say. Maybe because I'm near-sighted, I see the world much as the Impressionists did. Whether that is really true or not, my paintings of the natural world reflect my delight in color and light.
