. . . .next Friday, the 17th of September,  at 5:00 o'clock in Chester, Connecticut.

In celebration of "Come Home To Chester" weekend, we will open our doors to the public for the first time!   More than thirty artists have gathered together to create both a showplace of their works as well as a studio in which to share their knowledge and expertise.

....It's only one week from today!  So, I hope you've put the date on your calendar.

Come tour the new gallery, enjoy
the art, meet the artists, share some delectables, and visit the
                                                            studio and classroom space.

Some of my latest work will be on
                                                            display.  See you then.

140 HOURS Haitian Relief Auction

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP THE PEOPLE OF HAITI?
You can. Artists from all over the world are donating their art to an auction which will benefit Haitian Earthquake Relief efforts.

Here is the original painting I am donating. It is a 5" x 7" framed oil-on-linen air piece titled "Euonymous on Fire #2" which I painted en plein air at the end of my road last fall. The value of the painting is $300; the opening bid is $25. The 140 HOURS Haitian Relief Auction begins at 9 PM on Friday, January 29. I hope you will bid generously on this or other paintings in the auction because 100% of the money raised will go to Haiti. If you'd like to bid, please go to http://140hours.com/. You can also bid at www.twitter.com/140hours. ~Joan

Ups and Downs

Since my last entry, I have been stuck on writing. I was so excited to learn that I had sold another of my paintings at the Lyme Art Association in February. I wanted to post a photo of that painting "Swing Time" because it was one of my favorites: a swing hanging from a HUGE oak in the side yard of a home in Sharon, Connecticut. I painted it on a quiet July morning in 2006 when the mist was rising from the wetlands below and the sun was just coming over the hill above me. I was one of many members of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society who had been invited to a paint out sponsored by the Sharon Historical Society and Sharon Land Trust. What a beautiful part of the state in which to paint! Anyway, Murphy's Law ruled again: I had never photographed that painting! Oh well.

Despite that disappointment, I'm looking ahead to NEW paintings. I've taken three classes with Noel Belton here in Deep River. Trained at the Lyme Academy, Noel is an inspiration; we bought one of his oils years ago.

Also, I'm looking forward to my second workshop with Jan Blencowe this weekend at the Tracy Art Center in Old Saybrook. Another fine artist who is a good teacher, Jan will be sharing the methods she uses to maintain her painting-a-day project. She's responsible for getting me involved in sharing my paintings on the web. I'm so grateful. Stay tuned....
